Seeing footage of Jerusalem from 1897 is amazing in itself. But to see it digitally enhanced? It makes you feel like you’re there.

Jerusalem of Gold…in 1897

This video is truly gold. Any videos of Jerusalem, or Yerushalayim in Hebrew, are amazing. The modern city is also beautiful and inspiring. But there is something about this video. There is something that truly makes you feel like you traveled back in time. It captures Jerusalem in a way that many people could not imagine beforehand.

Israel’s capital has 70 names. Some of the most common, aside from Yerushalayim, include Zion, Moriah, Ariel, and the City of David.

The Focus on the Holy City

In Judaism, there is a lot of focus on this holy city. The Bible mentions it hundreds of times. Jewish liturgy is centered around Yerushalayim. Religious texts and songs speak of her holiness. At the end of the Passover seder, Jews chant “Next year in Jerusalem.”

There is a well-known text in the Talmud, Kiddushin 49b. It says (translation Chabad.org), “Ten measures of beauty were given to the world. Nine were taken by Jerusalem, and one was distributed all over Earth.”

It is not only the most beautiful city in the world, it is the holiest city. It is a city that has the power to uplift the downtrodden; to bring joy to the sad.

Jerusalem is truly a golden city.
