Israel’s new Foreign Minister Yair Lapid made a promise to the United States that he shouldn’t have made. It was a big mistake.

Israel’s New Foreign Minister Makes a Mistake

Yair Lapid, Israel’s new Foreign Minister and alternate Prime Minister, should not have promised the US that Israel “won’t surprise it” regarding the way it deals with Iran’s nuclear program. Israel has every right to defend itself. Although the United States is Israel’s greatest ally, Israel must put its own security at the top of the list. And that means that if it needs to act to defend itself, it does not need to tell anyone beforehand. As former Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu pointed out, can you imagine if Menachem Begin would have told someone before attacking Iraq’s nuclear reactor? He might never have done it.

Israel can’t have a government that puts its citizens at risk. Israel can’t have a government that is willing to compromise its security.

How long can this government last for? A government that has the Left, with the Right, with a Muslim Brotherhood party? The entire existence of this coalition is a paradox, and it’s putting Israel in situations that Israel should not be in.

Bibi might not be prime minister anymore, but he doesn’t want to see Israel’s security being compromised. And it seems like he will do everything he can to ensure that Israel stays safe.
