The lightening quick speed in which the rebel Sunni forces in the north have taken out Hama is shocking the Middle East and the rest of the world. The fact is, the rebel forces have been utilizing Turkish intelligence, drones, and leadership from behind the scenes the whole time. That fact, coupled with a Syrian military that cannot rely on Russia or any of the usual Iranian proxies has given the rebels the advantage.

Hama is considered a key city and is the gateway to both Tartus on the coast and Homs further south. When news broke that Hama had fallen, streams of cars could be seen for miles fleeing Homs, the next city on the rebels’ path to Damascus.

With nothing seeming to slow down the rebels’ advance, Assad’s chance of survival as Syria’s ruler dwindle. A rebel victory over Assad not only virtually takes Iran off the board, but brings Turkey and Turkey’s allies into central focus on who is set to control the Middle East next.

Israel has in recent days destroyed more border crossings between Lebanon and Syria. The latest crossing to be destroyed is the Qusayr bridge on the border between Lebanon and Syria, in western Homs. With the rebels advancing on Homs, this bridge could have helped Hezbollah bring their men into Syria to bolster regime forces against the rebels. Now Assad’s forces will have to fend off the rebels by themselves.
