The Trial: Did Israel’s Justice System Try to Destroy Netanyahu?

Lawfare is an effective public method to destroy the image of a public persona. It does not need to be based on facts and truth. It simply needs to be well organized, persistent, relentless, and with a clear goal – delegitimize and bring down a public figure from a position of power. Israel’s left-wing anti-Bibi Netanyahu movement is an excellent example of this. They have done everything that is necessary. Yet, their frustration just grows with every election win of Netanyahu’s Likud party.

The main reason why so many of the anti-Netanyahu forces have been focused on the lawfare angle is not because the cases against Netanyhau are solid cases. They are not. The main reason is that the political angle to bring down Netanyahu continues to fail time and again. So, if they can’t bring him down one way, they have decided they must try the alternative option where they have more wiggle room to maneuver.

When all is said and done, all of the cases brought against Bibi are attempting to paint Netanyahu as corrupt. They are based on super weak arguments or exaggerations that most of the Israeli electorate has clearly not been impressed with. Plain and simple, the villification of Netanyahu has not tarnished his reputation with his supporters as much as it has enhanced it. But with the middle-of-the-roaders, there is no question that they are uncomfortable with a Prime Minister that is seemingly going from one court case to another.

But the Israeli electorate is far and away one of the most educated and politically astute electorates. And when they see that in the midst of a fateful war that Israel is involved in, the anti-Netanyahu forces insist on dragging the Prime Minister through the Courts, the populace sees clearly that the cases against Netanyahu are more of a politically motivated withchunt than a genuine pursuit of justice.

One thing can be said, Netanyahu has not succeeded in reforming the Justice System of the State of Israel. It is hard to both be a victim and the one who successfully fights against the system that is trying so hard to destroy you. But the fact of the matter is that despite many years of attempts by a strongly anti-Bibi legal system in Israel, Netanyahu is Israel’s longest standing Prime Minister and has not been convicted.
