President Trump has offered the Palestinians and the Israelis a peace deal, the peace of the century. But this offer has been rejected by Abbas, the President of the Palestinian Authority.

Peace Offers

There have been peace offers over the years, even before the State of Israel was declared. The United Nations did not know what to do with the land of the middle east. After the horrors of the Holocaust the Jewish People wanted nothing more than to come home to Israel. The United Nations came up with a two state solution which the Jews agreed too, but the Arabs rejected it.

The Oslo Accords, 1993, created a Palestinian Authority with governing cities in Judea and Samaria and Gaza. This was signed between Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin and Yasser Arafat. In the Accords it is said that the Israeli Military will withdraw from areas. However, this did not happen as with in a few years the Second Intifada broke out and the Israeli Army returned to many areas.

The Road Map for Peace was written by George W Bush, with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and President Abbas. Although, both sides rejected parts of the Road Map and wanted a revision of it. This all occurred during the Second Intifada, where there was much violence, military operations by the Israeli Army and many suicide bombings by Palestinians. Eventually, the Road Map reached deadlock and has not been implemented.

President Trump has now offered a Peace deal, they are calling it the deal of the century. However, although the Israeli Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu has agreed to this deal. The President of the Palestinian Authority, Muhammed Abbas has rejected. This isn’t the first time and won’t be the last.

Palestinian Authority

The Palestinian Authority was created in 1994, they are to govern the Gaza Strip and certain areas in Judea and Samaria. Ismail Haniyeh was elected as Prime Minister in 2006, he declared that the PA “ will never recognize the usurper Zionist government and will continue our jihad-like movement until the liberation of Jerusalem.”

The Palestinian Authority takes place within the framework of a semi-presidential multi party. It does have 3 branches, executive, legislative and judiciary. The Palestinian Legislative Council, PLC, is an elected body of 132 representatives. The President is elected, and he appoints the Prime Minister and he chooses the cabinet ministers.

President Abbas, has a right to be scared of this deal that was offered by President Trump. Trump has seen to be in favor of Israel, after moving the American Embassy there and declaring it the eternal capital of Israel. Most recently Trump signed a deceleration saying that Israel has sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
