Do you believe you can change the world?

It takes one person with one idea to make a huge difference. It takes one person to change the world. These people changed everything.

Change the World

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” What a powerful statement. People who change the world must have had that in mind, whether consciously or not. If they didn’t believe in themselves, where would our world be today?

Here is a poem by James W. Foley. Although it is specifically about speaking kindly to others, the message applies to changing the world as well.

Drop a pebble in the water: just a splash, and it is gone;
But there’s half-a-hundred ripples circling on and on and on,
Spreading, spreading from the center, flowing on out to the sea.
And there is no way of telling where the end is going to be.

Drop a pebble in the water: in a minute you forget,
But there’s little waves a-flowing, and there’s ripples circling yet,
And those little waves a-flowing to a great big wave have grown;
You’ve disturbed a mighty river just by dropping in a stone.

Drop an unkind word, or careless: in a minute it is gone;
But there’s half-a-hundred ripples circling on and on and on.
They keep spreading, spreading, spreading from the center as they go,
And there is no way to stop them, once you’ve started them to flow.

Drop an unkind word, or careless: in a minute you forget;
But there’s little waves a-flowing, and there’s ripples circling yet,
And perhaps in some sad heart a mighty wave of tears you’ve stirred,
And disturbed a life was happy ere you dropped that unkind word.

Drop a word of cheer and kindness: just a flash and it is gone;
But there’s half-a-hundred ripples circling on and on and on,
Bearing hope and joy and comfort on each splashing, dashing wave
Till you wouldn’t believe the volume of the one kind word you gave.

Drop a word of cheer and kindness: in a minute you forget;
But there’s gladness still a-swelling, and there’s joy circling yet,
And you’ve rolled a wave of comfort whose sweet music can be heard
Over miles and miles of water just by dropping one kind word.

George Floyd

It is important to note that George Floyd was not a hero the way the media portrays him to be. He was a criminal. Yet, he shouldn’t have been killed and it was completely wrong and the policeman must be punished, and he is being punished. He is being brought to justice for his evil actions. It would be one thing if the policeman wasn’t fired and nothing was done. But clearly, the world thinks what occurred was wrong. The incident most definitely does not mean that policemen hate black people – there are black policemen too! Policemen give their lives to protect their counties, cities, and states.

Of course, we believe one person can change the world. With the tragedy of George Floyd’s unnecessary killing by a police officer, he himself isn’t someone to be looked up to. Will the world become a better place because of his tragic murder? Maybe. That would definitely be great. However, by the looks of the direction these anarchist protests are going, as a result of his killing, it doesn’t look so promising.

Hopefully we can all use our potential in the right way to improve the world.
