Absolutely amazing! Boris Johnson the UK Prime Minister starts getting ready for the High Holidays. Johnson here tried to blow the Shofar, which is blown on the Jewish New Year in the Synagogue.

High Holidays

Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement are referred to as the High Holidays. The New Year is where the Jewish People proclaim God as our King. There are then 10 days, known as the Ten Days of Repentance followed by the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur. This is a day where we ask God for forgiveness and to be sealed in the book of life.

Shofar

The Shofar is a ram’s horn, blown throughout the services at the Synagogue on the New Year festival. Furthermore, many also have the custom to blow the Shofar in the month of Elul. The Hebrew month leading up to the New Year. It is also blown at the end of the service on the Day of Atonement.

There are many reasons we blow the Shofar on the New Year. For example, like you would sound a trumpet at a coronation of a King, so too, here we are coronating God as our king. Additionally, Rosh Hashana, the New Year is also known as the Day of Judgement. The Shofar is blown throughout the Synagogue as to awaken people to repent and ask for forgiveness. So on the Day of Atonement, we are all sealed in the Book of Life.

Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in July 2019. Johnson is a popular figure and many people find him entertaining. Early on his career, Johnson was a Member of Parliament. Between 2008 and 2016 he was Mayor of London. Only recently in July 2019, he became Prime Minister of the UK.

Finally, wishing all of you a Happy New Year. May we all be sealed in the Book of Life. As they say in Hebrew Shana Tova!
