Every morning, Jews give thanks to God just even for something that seems simple like waking up. But it is not simple. We need to thank God for everything.

But First – Give Thanks to God

The very first thing Jews do upon waking up in the morning is give thanks to God. There is a short prayer called “Modeh Ani.” The Hebrew words are: “Modeh ani lefanecha melech chai v’kayam she’hechazarta bi nishmati b’chemla rabbah emunatecha.” Here is the translation (courtesy of Chabad.org): I offer thanks to You, living and eternal King, for You have mercifully restored my soul within me; Your faithfulness is great.

It is such a beautiful thing to have the first thing in the morning be to thank God. Being grateful leads to happiness. And building that into your day can make all the difference!

Singing Modeh Ani

Many Jewish musicians have created tunes to this short prayer. The different tunes can help a person learn the words and connect to God. In this video, the musician is clearly trying to show the message that we have to be thankful for everything. Although it seems like a given to wake up in the morning, it is something we have to thank God for everyday. Every breath we take, we must thank God. You can see all the different types of people holding up different signs in the video about what they are thankful for: Mothers, nature, people, God.

It only takes a few seconds in the morning. But try it. It will change your day.
