Israel’s Memorial Day – Yom Hazikaron
The Jewish people are always told to remember. It is part of who we are. G-d commands us to remember when He took us out of Egypt. He commands us to remember the Sabbath. The list goes on and on. The idea to remember is clearly something that G-d made part of our culture.
Sometimes, we remember the good. And sometimes, we remember the bad. On Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, we remember those who gave up their lives for the Jewish people and the Jewish homeland. Victims of terror who were murdered because of the fact that they were Jews living in G-d’s land are heroic. They may not have been actively defending the land and protecting our borders with guns and weapons, and they may not have been wearing a uniform, but just by living in Israel, they were doing their part to follow G-d’s will and protect the Jewish people.
The Dee family is a “regular” family. All of the Jewish families over the years who became bereaved are regular families whose lives were turned completely upside down. They didn’t want to be put in the spotlight for something so horrific. And they never thought they would be. These regular families were forced to become bereaved families. And it is something that can never be changed.
Let’s pray that no more families become bereaved. Let’s pray that the complete redemption will come now. The pain is just too great. We can’t handle the number of victims and those killed going up every year. Our hearts are heavy with grief. We want it to end. May G-d bless us with peace speedily in our days.
