Welcoming Immigrants from Ukraine
It is never easy to move to a new country. And when you have to do so unexpectedly because you are fleeing war, it is even more difficult. The challenges and the stress of leaving a life behind without planning to can be daunting. But when you are returning home to your people, to your ancient homeland, and you are welcomed by youth who are cheering you on, the process can maybe be somewhat better. Or at least maybe it can be somewhat easier to enter that new life. And that is what is happening here with the immigrants from Ukraine.
What is taking place in Ukraine is challenging. It is terrifying. And for people escaping, they have no idea what to expect. We hope that for the Jews who are coming home to Israel, they are somewhat comforted by their welcoming committee at Ben Gurion Airport. We hope they can feel some sense of relief and safety by seeing Israeli youth greet them with love and with open arms. Because all Jews are family – no matter where they are from.
Of course, we want to welcome people to Israel who are coming because they chose to at the moment rather than needing to escape. Jews should not have to escape from anywhere anymore. We pray that all Jews will come home soon and will not need to be rescued from more wars or from anything else.
