The best hope for the Iranian people is for them to overthrow the radical Islamic regime that they are imprisoned by. This goes back to 1979, little more than 40 years ago, when the Ayatollahs and their followers overthrew the Shah of Iran. The Shah led a pro-Western regime that was far from perfect. But his openness to Westernization and the general radicalization of large swaths of the Iranian public led to the revolution that brought him down. It did not require a majority to pressure his government into giving in. A powerful armed minority was sufficient to do the job. The Shah ended up in exile and freedom was thrown out the window.
Most people mistakenly assume that Iran will never change. They are wrong. Today’s reality in Iran is actually the aberration. There was an opportunity during Barack Obama’s term to turn back the clock. But Obama did not stand up for the protesters in Iran when they took to the streets. Had he supported them, it still may not have worked. But Obama was not just silent. He actually continued to allow money to flow to the Ayatollahs which ended up empowering them instead of weakening them.
Donald Trump, between 2016 and 2020 brought strong sanctions back on Iran, but Joe Biden, probably at the beckon and call of Barack Obama, weakened the sanctions. This allowed Iran to continue building their offensive weapons program that threatens Israel and much of Western Europe. Today, the world is poised to embark on a new Middle East, one that has not existed for thousands of years. In a matter of a few years, Israel may very well have attained a peace treaty or normalization treaty with Saudi Arabia, and perhaps even with Egypt and Lebanon. It all depends on how President Trump decides to pressure Iran and Egypt into submission.
But as Netanyahu leads Israel to a state of further control over stability and security in the Middle East and Israel’s enemies are bombed into submission, things will be different. Don’t be surprised if Israel signs a normalization treaty with Iran in a matter of 5-10 years.
