Does the secret to Jewish survival lie in the story of Hanukkah? How have the Jews continued on, physically and spiritually, for thousands of years?
There is something magnifcent about the Jewish people. Century after century, decade after decade, year after year, and month after month, individuals and nations have wanted to destroy the nation of Israel. But they have not succeeded. Some have wanted to destroy the Jews physically, and some have wanted to destroy the Jews spiritually. But if you look around, neither of those tragedies have happened. So, what is the secret to Jewish survival? How have the greatest nations come and gone, and the tiny Jewish nation has continued to exist through them all?
The Story of Hanukkah
Maybe the answer lies in the story of Hanukkah. The Greeks wanted to destroy the Jewish people’s spirituality. They did not care if they existed physically, they just did not want them to have religion as part of who they were. The Greeks wanted to obliterate G-d and the Bible. And how did they attempt to do that? They made laws to stop the Jews from practicing their religion. No studying the Bible. No Circumcision. They forbid the Jews from keeping the Sabbath.
But the Greeks failed. The Jewish nation continued to practice their Judaism. They refused to let the Greeks dictate the future of the Jewish people. And now, if you look around today at how Jews celebrate Hanukkah, it is publicly. They light the candles by a window so that the entire world can see. But the thing is, there is still a war. Some Jews have given in and are not as proud of their heritage. They do not practice their Judaism.
Choose to be a stronger, practicing Jew. Do not give into the Greeks.
